How to Determine Your Face Shape (And Why It Matters)

Why Face Shape Matters

Your face shape determines which haircuts, glasses, facial hair styles, and even neckline shapes look best on you. A face shape detector can identify yours instantly. It's not about being more or less attractive - it's about working with your natural proportions instead of against them.

The 7 Main Face Shapes

  • Oval: Forehead slightly wider than chin, gentle curves. Length is about 1.5x width. The most versatile shape - most styles work.
  • Round: Width and length roughly equal, soft curves, full cheeks. Best with styles that add vertical length and angular definition.
  • Square: Strong jawline, forehead and jaw roughly same width. Angular features. Looks great with softer hairstyles that balance the angles.
  • Heart: Wide forehead, narrow chin, often with a widow's peak. Best with styles that add width at the chin level.
  • Oblong/Rectangle: Face is notably longer than wide, with a long straight cheek line. Side-swept styles and width-adding cuts work best.
  • Diamond: Narrow forehead and chin with wide cheekbones. The rarest shape. Looks great with styles that widen the forehead.
  • Triangle: Narrow forehead with a wide jaw. Best with volume on top and styles that balance upper and lower face.

How to Measure Your Face Shape

You need four measurements:

  • Forehead width: Measure across the widest part of your forehead.
  • Cheekbone width: Measure across the tops of your cheekbones.
  • Jawline width: Measure from the tip of your chin to below your ear, multiply by two.
  • Face length: Measure from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin.

Compare the ratios: if face length is greatest with roughly equal forehead and cheekbone width, you're oval. If width and length are similar, you're round or square (square if your jawline is angular).

Best Haircuts by Face Shape

  • Oval: Almost anything works. Experiment freely.
  • Round: Fades with volume on top, pompadours, textured crops. Avoid bowl cuts.
  • Square: Slightly longer styles, textured layers, side parts. Your jaw does the heavy lifting.
  • Heart: Medium-length styles with volume. Avoid slicked-back looks that emphasize forehead width.
  • Oblong: Side-swept bangs, medium length, avoid extra height on top.
