What Is Negging?

Negging is a manipulation tactic where someone gives a backhanded compliment or subtle insult designed to undermine confidence and make the target seek their approval.

Where Negging Comes From

Negging originated in the pick-up artist (PUA) community of the early 2000s, popularized by the book The Game by Neil Strauss. The theory was that attractive people are used to compliments, so a subtle put-down would make them work harder for your approval. Examples include 'You're pretty for someone who doesn't try' or 'I love how you just don't care what people think of your outfit.' The tactic relies on targeting insecurities.

How to Recognize Negging

Negging disguises itself as humor or concern. Key signs: the comment makes you feel confused rather than complimented, you feel the need to prove yourself afterward, the person delivers it with a smile as if it is friendly, and you keep replaying the comment trying to figure out if it was mean. If a compliment leaves you feeling worse rather than better, it was probably a neg.

Why Negging Is a Red Flag

Beyond being manipulative, negging signals that someone views relationships as power dynamics to be won rather than connections to be built. Research in the Personality and Individual Differences journal links negging behavior to dark triad personality traits โ€” narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Someone who negs you early on is unlikely to become more respectful over time.
