What Is the Cheerleader Effect?

The cheerleader effect is the cognitive bias where people appear more attractive when seen in a group than when seen individually — groups average out individual imperfections and create a more favorable overall impression.

The Science

Popularized by Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother but scientifically validated by Drew Walker and Edward Vul at UC San Diego in 2014, the cheerleader effect occurs because the brain processes group faces by averaging them together. Individual asymmetries and quirks are smoothed out in mental averaging, making each person appear closer to the group average — which is inherently more attractive than most individuals.

Why It Happens

When you look at a group, your visual system cannot process every face in detail simultaneously. Instead, it creates an ensemble representation — an averaged impression. Because averaged faces are consistently rated as more attractive than individual ones (a well-documented finding in attractiveness research), being part of a group literally increases your perceived attractiveness. The effect works for groups as small as three people.

Using It on Dating Apps

The cheerleader effect explains why including one or two group photos on your dating profile is strategic — you appear more attractive in context. However, all group photos create confusion about which person you are. The optimal strategy: lead with a clear solo photo, then include one group photo where you are easily identifiable. This way, you get the cheerleader effect boost without the 'which one are you?' problem.
