What Is the Contrast Effect?

The contrast effect is a cognitive bias where your perception of something changes based on what you just experienced — in dating, someone appears more or less attractive depending on who you saw immediately before them.

How It Works in Dating

Research published in Psychonomic Science demonstrated that viewing photos of highly attractive people temporarily decreases how attractive you rate the next person. On dating apps, this means that swiping through a string of very attractive profiles makes the next average profile look less appealing than it would in isolation. Conversely, seeing several unappealing profiles makes the next decent one look great.

The Dating App Problem

The contrast effect is amplified by dating apps because you evaluate profiles in rapid succession. Attractive users benefit from contrast against average profiles, while average users are penalized by contrast against very attractive ones. The algorithm also tends to show popular profiles early, creating an unfavorable contrast for profiles shown later. This is partly why everyone feels 'average' on dating apps despite being perfectly attractive.

Using the Contrast Effect Strategically

In your own profile, the contrast effect explains why photo order matters. Lead with your strongest photo — first impressions anchor perception. On your profile, varied photos create internal contrast that keeps attention. When choosing where to go on dates, consider that a lively, warm restaurant will make you seem more interesting than a boring coffee shop — environmental contrast affects perception of the person too.
